Crawfish River
General Info
Dodge County’s section of the Crawfish River is a hidden gem, offering serene paddling, scenic landscapes, and historical intrigue.

The Crawfish River stretches for approximately 81 miles through Columbia, Dodge, and Jefferson counties, offering diverse scenery and unique paddling experiences. In Dodge County, the river widens and slows south of Ninabuck Road near Columbus due to the influence of the Danville Dam. By the Ninabuck Bridge, the current becomes almost lake-like, making for a relaxing paddle.
Astico Park, located near County Road TT east of Columbus, is a must-see highlight. This picturesque area features a dramatic hairpin turn, with a wooded hill separating the two legs of the river. The journey here is especially scenic, featuring a rustic trestle on the eastern leg.
As you approach the Danville Dam, the channel becomes surprisingly shallow despite the dam’s impressive 10-foot height, revealing the heavily silted millpond. The portage near the dam is well-marked and easy to navigate, offering breathtaking views of the historic mill and dam, which remain remarkably photogenic despite their aged state.
Dodge County’s section of the Crawfish River is a hidden gem, offering serene paddling, scenic landscapes, and historical sights. From the peaceful stretches near Columbus to the dramatic sights at Astico Park and the Danville Dam, this water trail is a must for locals and visitors alike.
