One of the signature natural attractions in Dodge County (let alone the state), the Horicon Marsh is a one-of-a-kind wilderness destination in central Wisconsin.
The 33,000-acre natural area is one of the largest freshwater marshes in the United States and is a popular attraction for outdoor enthusiasts. Birdwatchers will marvel at the spring and fall migrations, which bring hundreds of thousands of geese, ducks, and other birds through the area. The marsh offers year-round options for recreation, including hiking, biking, fishing, paddling, hunting, winter recreation, and more.
The northern portion of the marsh is a National Wildlife Refuge that’s managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the southern third of the marsh is a State Wildlife Area that’s overseen by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The marsh was recognized as a Wetland of International Importance in 1990s and is also a State and Globally Important Bird Area.
